Sean Baker has become one of the most celebrated indie filmmakers for his humanist stories about marginalized communities. His latest film, Anorais his most commercially successful to date and also one of his most acclaimed.

It won the 2024 Palm d’Or at Cannes and earned strong reviews from critics, and it’s now available to buy on digital platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV+, and Fandango. While recent releases are often made available to rent and buy simultaneously, Anora is only available for purchase.

The film stars Mikey Madison as Anora, or Ani, a stripper and sex worker who finds herself in a whirlwind romance with club patron Vanya, the wealthy but irresponsible son of Russian oligarchs. The pair elope to Las Vegas, but things quickly go awry when Vanya’s parents send out henchmen to get the marriage annulled.

The film blends drama with dark comedy and a surprising amount of slapstick. The film’s directing and casting were praised in the Rolling Stone review of the film, with David Fear writing “[Baker]’s aided and abetted by a cast that allows the movie to be breezy one second and heartbreaking and/or black-humorously rough the next… But what truly makes Anora a near-masterpiece of cockeyed humanism in addition to a cutting indictment on cash ruling everything around everybody is the young woman occupying this romp’s center square.”

Anora does not yet have a streaming or Blu-Ray date. The Neon-produced film is expected to land on Hulu sometime early next year, as the streamer has an exclusive deal with the indie distributor. Baker’s other films include his breakout hit Tangerine, The Florida Projectand Red Rocket. Anora is considered a frontrunner for various categories at the Oscars, which will take place on March 2, 2025.
